UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - the EAGLE
THE COLD WAR
With the commencement of the Cold War, the world divided itself between democracy (well, actually western capitalism) and Soviet or Chinese communism (well, actually totalitarianism). An important point to make at this stage is to acknowledge that between 1945 and 1949, America was THE world power. Indeed, Soviet planners worried why the United States did not use nuclear weapons to eliminate totalitarianism since no one else had them at that time (the MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction – atomic deterrent doctrine did not yet exist).
The political and strategic dance of the super powers around the world from those days until the fall of the Iron Curtain (secured by President Reagan in 1991) along with the echoes of the defunct English, French and Spanish colonial empires, set the stage for the chaos we see today.
