The NATO AAMDS defense shield installation is an extreme sore point for the Russians. The AAMDS and the associated build-up in Eastern Europe continues as US/EU/NATO and Russia argue over who started it. SPEAROFATHENA provides this article as a reality check for those warmongers who think that the build-up makes sense. The escalation is dangerous to NATO, the EU and Russia.
RELATIVE STRENGTH OF OPPONENTS
One measure of a country's or an Alliance's strength is its population. According to the CIA's latest population estimates of countries involved in this Cold War - The Sequel are as follows:
142 million - Russia
874 million - USA (321) + EU (514) + Poland (39)
From the above numbers, NATO and its allied countries (which we will refer to as NATO) outnumber Russia and its allies by a ratio of over 6 to 1. Many smaller countries are not included in the totals (such as Turkey, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, etc), but Russia ends up even more heavily outnumbered when the stragglers are also counted.
The USA is the world's third most populous nation and the richest. Russia's population is between Japan's (127 M) and Bangladesh's (169 M). Russian demographics are at a severe disadvantage numerically speaking.
A second measure of a country's or an Alliance's strength is its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Russia's GDP is about $2 Trillion USD (similar to Italy's GDP, i.e. quite modest) while US GDP is about $17 Trillion USD. The NATO alliance and associated countries out-produce Russia and its allies by well over 8 to 1 if not 10 to 1. An Allied War Time Economy could produce about four to five times more than what a Russian War Time Economy could. The Russians know this as review of their weapon system development fields attest (submarines, ECM, specialized munitions, etc).
From the above we estimate that NATO is potentially 8 times stronger than Russia over the medium to long-term. The equalizer over this imbalance is each force's nuclear arsenal which makes all out war unfeasible as theorized by the MAD deterrence doctrine.
